Below is an excerpt for the latest Weekend Devotional from Rest & Chaos
“…This week we are going to take a fresh, new look at a familiar parable. I hope it is as inspiring to you as it was for me!
Build Your Life!
Have you heard of the parable of the wise and foolish man? The foolish man builds his house upon the sand and then the rains come down and his house crashes. The wise man builds his house upon the rock and then rains come down but his house stands strong.
I always figured I would never be foolish enough to build my house on sand. But then I heard this story explained in a sermon a while ago that brought clarity to this parable.
Jesus was talking to the Jews who lived near the Dead Sea. They knew that during the dry season the sand in that area would bake until it appeared to be hard as a rock. If you were not from the area, or if you didn’t know any better you might build your house on the baked sand thinking that it was rock. Once the storms of the rainy season came the sand would reveal its true nature and the house would crash.
All of a sudden, this parable takes on a whole new meaning.
Because the foolish person did not realize what he was doing. He built his house on what he thought was a rock. He thought it was a good foundation.
Often the world says to build your life on success, money, or happiness. Our culture convinces us to build our lives on our net worth, what we do for a career, or even how many followers we have on social media platforms.
But these things are like baked sand.
They may appear to hold you up for a while but when the storms of life come in they will reveal their true nature. And everything you worked so hard to build will be washed away. In an instant, you could lose your success, money, or career. After all, the stock market could crash. Wars and terrorist attacks can hit too close to home. The test results can come back to the doctor, revealing we don’t have much time left.
Our circumstances can change quickly and unexpectedly.
But not God. Nothing can take Him away from us.
“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.” – Romans 8:38
We need to be careful that we are building our lives on the solid rock foundation of God’s word. He is the only one who will keep our lives from being washed away by the rain. We can lose everything we own. We can even lose our very lives. But no one can take away Jesus. No one can separate you from His love. And no one can keep you from enjoying paradise with Him someday.
Be careful what you build your life on. What you think is rock, may actually be sand.
“The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior;
my God is my rock, in whom I find protection.
He is my shield, the power that saves me,
and my place of safety.” -Psalm 18:2…”
