Yesterday I watched the documentary, Won’t You Be My Neighbor. For those that didn’t grow up in the US, it is a behind the scenes look at the creator & star of PBS’s Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, Fred Rogers.
He had planned to go to seminary when God took his ministry & his life in a whole new & unexpected direction. This groundbreaking children’s show ran for 31 seasons. Fred used the show not just to entertain but to tackle tough issues like divorce, assassination & racism head-on in ways that children could understand.
It could be said the Fred Roger’s entire life was about loving others. I think he would have liked the song “You Don’t Love God If You Don’t Love Your Neighbor”.
The Bible has quite a lot to say about loving others.
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. – John 13:34 NKJV
Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; – Romans 12:10 NKJV
with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, – Ephesians 4:2 NKJV
And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, – Hebrews 10:24
One other note about Mr. Roger’s, his favorite number was 143. Do you want to know why? There is 1 letter in “I”, 4 letters in “LOVE” & 3 letters in “YOU”.

God gifted Fred Rogers in such a unique way to communicate complex concepts in simple terms. I also loved the way he inspired creativity–such as impromptu operas and food items as an art medium. Our older son was inspired by the latter when he was about six. He created a race-car scene on a plate with long banana slices for the stands, raisins for the people, cheese cubes for the cars, etc. Today he is an artist and amateur (but EXCELLENT!) chef!
