Patience (or forbearance) is the ability to endure difficult circumstances. Patience may involve perseverance in the face of delay; tolerance of provocation without responding in disrespect/anger; or forbearance when under strain, especially when faced with longer-term difficulties. (Wikipedia)
How does that definition translate to the life of a Christ follower? The answer is three-fold.
Patience with Ourselves & Others
Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, being diligent to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. – Ephesians 4:1-3 NASB
A hot-tempered person stirs up strife, But the slow to anger calms a dispute. – Proverbs 15:18 NASB
The end of a matter is better than its beginning; Patience of spirit is better than arrogance of spirit. Do not be eager in your spirit to be angry, For anger resides in the heart of fools. – Ecclesiastes 7:8-9 NASB
So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so must you do also. In addition to all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. – Colossians 3:12-14 NASB
Love is patient, love is kind, it is not jealous; love does not brag, it is not arrogant. – 1 Corinthians 13:4 NASB
One who is slow to anger has great understanding; But one who is quick-tempered exalts foolishness. A tranquil heart is life to the body, But jealousy is rottenness to the bones. – Proverbs 14:29-30 NASB
Now may the God who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another, according to Christ Jesus, so that with one purpose and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, accept one another, just as Christ also accepted us, for the glory of God. – Romans 15:5-7 NASB
Patience With God
For the one who sows to his own flesh will reap destruction from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit. Let’s not become discouraged in doing good, for in due time we will reap, if we do not become weary. So then, while we have opportunity, let’s do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith. – Galatians 6:8-10 NASB
Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him; Do not get upset because of one who is successful in his way, Because of the person who carries out wicked schemes. – Psalm 37:7 NASB
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and pleading with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:6-7 NASB
For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised. – Hebrews 10:36 NASB
Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing, you do not realize right now, but you will understand later.” – John 13:7 NASB
But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not willing for any to perish, but for all to come to repentance. – 2 Peter 3:8-9 NASB
The Lord is good to those who await Him, To the person who seeks Him. It is good that he waits silently For the salvation of the Lord. – Lamentations 3:25-26 NASB
I waited patiently for the Lord; And He reached down to me and heard my cry. He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the mud; And He set my feet on a rock, making my footsteps firm. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear And will trust in the Lord. – Psalm 40:1-3 NASB
You too be patient; strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near. – James 5:8 NASB
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. – Romans 12:2 NASB
But you, be strong and do not lose courage, for there is a reward for your work.” – 2 Chronicles 15:7 NASB
For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, through perseverance we wait eagerly for it. – Romans 8:24-25 NASB
The Lord will fight for you, while you keep silent.” – Exodus 14:14 NASB
