Redeem (A Friday Link-up)

What do you think of when you hear the word redeem? Is it one of these definitions from Dictionary.com :

to buy or pay off; clear by payment:
to buy back, as after a tax sale or a mortgage foreclosure.
to recover (something pledged or mortgaged) by payment or other satisfaction:
to exchange (bonds, trading stamps, etc.) for money or goods.
to convert (paper money) into specie.
to discharge or fulfill (a pledge, promise, etc.).
to make up for; make amends for; offset (some fault, shortcoming, etc.):
to obtain the release or restoration of, as from captivity, by paying a ransom.
to deliver from sin and its consequences by means of a sacrifice offered for the sinner.

To be perfectly honest my first thought is often about a coupon for a nice dinner out or a new pair of shoes.

But that pales in comparison to the “coupon” that we redeem when we receive Christ as our savior.

But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir. – Galatians 4:4-7 NIV

I love the lyrics to My Redeemer Lives

Who taught the sun where to stand in the morning?
And who told the ocean, you can only come this far?

And who showed the moon where to hide ’til evening?
Whose words alone can catch a falling star?

Well, I know my Redeemer lives
I know my Redeemer lives
All of creation testifies
This life within me cries
I know my Redeemer lives, yeah

The very same God that spins things in orbit
Runs to the weary, the worn and the weak
And the same gentle hands that hold me when I’m broken
They conquered death to bring me victory

Now, I know my Redeemer lives
I know my Redeemer lives
Let all creation testify
Let this life within me cry
I know my Redeemer

He lives to take away my shame
And He lives forever, I’ll proclaim
That the payment for my sin
Was the precious life He gave
But now He’s alive and
There’s an empty grave…

And I know my Redeemer lives
I know my Redeemer lives
Let all creation testify
Let this life within me cry
I know my Redeemer

I know my Redeemer lives
I know my Redeemer lives
I know my Redeemer lives
He lives
He lives
He lives
He lives

  1. Such a beautiful song! So grateful for the redemption He offers us! I think most of restoration when I think of redeem…though redeeming a good coupon is lots of fun, too! 🙂

  2. I really need to be redeemed,
but sin has been my go-to place,
and all my life it’s really seemed
that I’ve been running fast from grace.
I do know that Jesus would
like to get me to slow down
by offering a gift of blood
and wearing, yeah, that thorny crown,
but I’m scared that He might ask
    something similar of me,
and I’m not up to that grim task,
and on the whole I’d rather be
free and always on the lam…
but here He stands, the Great I Am.

  3. Barb, your message and the hymn bring out an inspiring testament. Your use of coupons and redemption teaches us so much.

    For redemption
