I Got Nothin’

Usually when I see the prompt for Five Minute Friday I have to be careful not to go over the five minute time limit, unfortunately, this week I seem to have a case of writers block.

The word this week is “SHE” –

She Sells Seashells, also known as Sally Sells Seashells is an old tongue twister made popular by Terry Sullivan in 1909. The phrase was a popular tongue twister even before that, “She Sells Seashells” appearing in the 1 December 1871 edition of “The Family Herald; a Domestic Magazine of Useful Information and Amusement”.

“She Sells Seashells” Lyrics

She sells seashells by the seashore,
The shells she sells are seashells, I’m sure.
So if she sells seashells on the seashore,
Then I’m sure she sells seashore shells.

Alternative version

Various modern versions exist that are based on this song, often “she” is replaced by “Sally”. One popular modern tongue twister can be found below:

Sally sells seashells by the seashore.
She sells seashells on the seashell shore.
The seashells she sells are seashore shells,
Of that I’m sure.
She sells seashells by the seashore.
She hopes she will sell all her seashells soon.
If neither he sells seashells
Nor she sells seashells,
Who shall sell seashells?
Shall seashells be sold?

Though the words are not my own, I hope that I put a little smile on your face today.

  1. Sally’s sea shells strike a chord; To marvel at my awesome Lord; Supporting my flesh by bones made stout; He made the lovely mollusk’s strength without!

  2. Ah, I love tongue twisters! This is one of my favorites, along with the ones in the Dr. Suess book Fox in Socks. That was a staple in my preschool class. It was a personal challenge and a big amusement for the kids to see if Miss Marisa could get through it all without a mistake. 🙂
