Remembering 9/11

Do you remember where you were when you first heard the news that an airplane had crashed into the World Trade Center?

I was at BSF (Bible Study Fellowship) with my children.  The prayer time that morning carried with it, fear of the unknown but also confidence that whatever this evil was, God was still in control.

I was inexplicably drawn to watching the news coverage in the days and weeks following the bombings.  You might even say I was addicted to it.  This “addiction” caused some serious problems in my marriage that I will always regret.

I will never forget the sonic boom that was caused when the Air Force scrambled to assist an airplane with a hostage situation. My kids were playing in the backyard with some friends when I heard & felt the BOOM.  I quickly brought them all inside until I could find out what was going on. Instant fear!

But I also remember that Americans returned to church in record numbers.  Sadly, once life got back to “normal”, most of the “newcomers” went back to their lives and forgot all about what drove them to church in the first place.

We were all looking for answers.  How did this happen? Why did they do it? What can we do to prevent something like this from happening again? How many bodies are they going to find in the rubble? Is anyone still alive?

The video below is one that my husband watches every year.  It is a good reminder of what happened on that fateful day, September 11, 2001.

Take some time today to pray for those who are still grieving the loss they suffered due to the terrorist attack. Also, pray for our country to find the unity & patriotism that we had 19 years ago, instead of the unrest & rioting that we are now experiencing.

God Bless America & God Bless You!

  1. I was in the early stages of pregnancy with my oldest, just getting past some morning sickness when the coverage rolled across my TV. I remember the feelings of horror and fear for what kind of world I was bringing my baby into. But, I also remember the church youth group we were volunteering in at the time quickly drawing together for prayer and worship, as so many churches were then. I remember even witnessing our leaders coming together in prayer and how encouraging that was to see. There was a sense of solidarity in that time that has rarely been witnessed again, unfortunately. Thanks for reminding us, Barb. We must never forget.

  2. My husband and I were in our office when we heard the news. We packed up and drove home, listening to the radio reports on the way. I remember my husband, who is a fire protection engineer, commenting as we were driving home that the tower was going to collapse. We got home and turned on the television to watch the reports and it wasn’t long before we saw the towers fall.

As I was watching your video link this morning, I was thinking about how blessed we are in this country. Our soldiers have fought through many terrible wars, but we have not experienced an all-out war on our own soil since the Civil War. Yes, we have experienced civil unrest and acts of terrorism, but for those not directly effected by those events, 9/11 was the first large scale attack on our country since Pearl Harbor. Like Pearl Harbor, 9/11 was a catalyst that united our country. However, after Pearl Harbor, Americans remained united to support our soldiers in the war effort. After 9/11, there was a manhunt. And so, after the initial shock wore off, Americans mostly became spectators, watching the manhunt for Osama Bin Laden.

We have been blessed to escape the devastation of war on our doorstep when so many others are less fortunate. Many fathers and brothers and sisters and mothers are facing the devastation and loss of war and terror on a daily basis. Many little children cry themselves to sleep having seen homes and loved ones destroyed.

Remembering 9/11 helps to put things into perspective.

Lord, may our hearts be in tune with your heart. Teach us to pray with compassion and wisdom.
