From Dr. James Dobson’s Family Talk (10/27/20):
The date was May 15th, 1948, and I was twelve years old. I was getting ready to leave for school, but my mother came to me and asked me to join her in the bedroom. I could tell by her demeanor that something was up. She began to talk excitedly about an event that happened the previous day at the United Nations.
My mother explained that for centuries Christians have been waiting for the fruition of a biblical prophecy that foretold the Jews’ return to the Promised Land. She then told me with overflowing joy that this had indeed just happened, and Israel was a nation once again after nearly 1900 years. That memory is still so vivid in my mind even though it happened eight decades ago.
Why is this story important? And why should Christians and America care about this ancient land and its descendants?
The Jews are God’s chosen people, and Israel is covenant land given to the Jews by Jehovah as an everlasting possession. Thousands of years ago, God promised that He would make Abraham a great nation, and indeed He did. And all people of the world have been blessed through Abraham’s offspring because of Jesus.
But the Jewish people have also experienced great hardship and persecution. Just about everyone knows about the 6 million Jews killed during the Holocaust. Fewer people know that Jerusalem has been leveled 18 times, and has changed hands 86 times. The amazingly resilient Jewish people were scattered throughout the nations, and many believed Israel would never be a country again.
And yet in Ezekiel, God had proclaimed that Israel would be reborn as a nation in the last days. Many doubted the trustworthiness of the Bible because of this passage. But on May 14, 1948, the State of Israel was recognized as a nation. Can anyone doubt the sovereignty of our Lord?!
While the theology of some Christians may differ when it comes to the nation of Israel, there is definite common ground we share as believers. My friend, Pastor Robert Jeffress, explains that Christians should care about the nation of Israel for at least three reasons. First, it is the geographical and cultural origin of our Christian faith. Jesus was born, carried out His ministry, died on the cross, and was risen from the dead in the Holy Land. Second, God promised to give the land of Israel to the Jewish people, and history shows us that He did. Third, we share many values and political goals with our friends in Israel, including life, liberty, and freedom of belief and conscience.
God promises in His Holy Word that He will bless those who bless Israel (Genesis 12:3). Our prayer is that the next Chief Executive Officer of the U.S. will continue to promote and cultivate a vibrant bond of friendship with the nation of Israel, which is our only ally in the Middle East. Anti-Semitism and all forms of racial discrimination are inherently evil, and we condemn them categorically. We are a nation that is dedicated to “freedom and justice for all” (The U.S. Pledge of Allegiance), and we must stand strong with Israel.
Unfortunately, not all politicians are supportive of Israel and the Jewish people. This is why knowing a candidate’s voting record and his or her underlying party platform is crucial. Our country is on the verge of abandoning our Judeo-Christian foundation that has guided this nation for over two centuries. God help us if we fail to take action while we still can. Please steward your civil duty and vote this November 3rd, and encourage others to do the same.
