Look Out the Window

You may not know this but besides our primary job of getting all of our kiddos to and from school safely, my bus attendant, Amber, and I also have the responsibility to work on kindergarten readiness with our little friends. This involves things such as counting, colors, letter recognition etc.

One game that we play every day is “Who’s Next”. We count all the kids before we leave school and then as we travel home, we ask questions like, “How many friends are left?” or “Whose turn is it next”. Yes, preschoolers and can add and subtract!

We also play a modified version of I-Spy, with queries such as, “Where is the green mailbox?” or “Can anyone find the pink dump truck?”

When practicing our routes in the fall we look for things along the way that may be interesting for the children. This year there are people who wave at us every day, airplanes, dinosaurs, a dragon and a myriad of holiday decorations.

There is never a dull moment when you spend 40 hours a week with preschoolers.

Have I mentioned lately that I love my job?!?! You see, at the beginning of the year we had several students on our route that were considered non-verbal. But with a lot of hard work on behalf our staff, the local school district, the parents, and of course, the children themselves, these precious students can now chatter as well as their peers.

What do you do for fun?

  1. Children are more observant than we give them credit for. By the time they’re our age they learn how to dismiss the background and everything else that isn’t in their interest to see. But at their age, everything is interesting, they don’t know if they’re interested or not. You’re helping them to distinguish.

    Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

  2. Wow! As a mommy, I love the fact that you are a blessing to children. This warms my heart. I love the bus driver and attendant on my children’s route. They are believers too and it’s always a blessing to interact with them.
