Leaving a Legacy

Parenting is not for the faint of heart. We are constantly inundated with new things we must do in order to be considered a good parent. May I be so bold as to say that neither the world nor the church should dictate your parenting style? Instead, look to the Lord’s example and you will provide your children with an undeniable legacy of faith that is rooted in The Word.

The good leave an inheritance to their children’s children,
but the sinner’s wealth is laid up for the righteous. – Proverbs 13:22 NRSVUE

As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. – Colossians 2:6-7 NRSVUE

Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. – Ephesians 6:4 NIV

I have included a couple of gifts I received from my children in the last few years. Our goal was to raise our children to be hard-working adults who love and serve the Lord. Have we succeeded? Only time will tell.

  1. Glad I never had a child,
    for my parental legacy
would leave the kid running quite wild,
    far beyond propriety,
in the realm of biker bars,
    stuck outside with a newbie
to count the flashing shooting stars
    that leave both feeling groovy
that while Dad’s jaw did get broke
    he learned about astronomy,
and ever after could then joke
    that Dad got a lobotomy
and all that Dad from then on did
    was supervised by a kid.
