In the broad sense, Psalms are one of the 66 books of the Bible. However, upon deeper reflection psalms are:

• hymns or songs of praise
• communal and individual lament
• royal psalms
• imprecation (curses)
• individual thanksgivings
• communal thanksgiving
• wisdom
• pilgrimage.

Psalms are not limited to chapters in the Bible; they are still being written today.
