I don’t know about you, but when my life feels all off kilter I always head to the book of James. I have lost track of the number of times that I have read/studied the book. Each time I come away with a lighter spirit and renewed faith in God.
I have been enjoying the You version reading plan entitled The Book of James with Francis Chan with my dear friend Stephanie.
At the same time I read James, the Lynchpin of Our Faith: How the Brother of Jesus Jump-Started the Early Church by fellow blogger David Kitz from I Love the Psalms.
” Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.” James 1:2-8 NIV
Do you have a book that you turn to when you need a reset? What about that particular book draws you back to its narrative?
The book of James is just one of those matter of fact and gets to the point, which is so helpful!

I love the book of James. I will check out the one by Frances Chan. I usually go to The Psalms and Philippians and Ephesians when I need a reset.

I love this. James is straight to the point. No fluff.
When I need a reset, my Book is Romans. It grounds me in Grace. It reminds me who I was, who I am in Christ, and that nothing can separate me from His love.
Sometimes we just need to go back to the foundations.

Francis Chan’s Crazy Love is a book I’ve read a few times, especially when it first came out. I used to give copies of it to people. I’m currently enamored by Rick Rubin’s book The Creative Act: A Way of Being. I’ve myself returning to it repeatedly as I’ve dealt with my PTSD and sought solace for my creativity.

Psalms – I can always find several chapters and verses for whatever it is that is needing a reset. And usually more that I didn’t know needed one!

I was prompted on Friday to read James again. I started a word plan of James and it’s such a rich book. I realised on reading again that so many fundamental truths and scriptures I know so well come from the book of James. Your post has encouraged me.
