Stay Near to God with Poetry and Prayer

It is time for the April One Word Linkup. Keep reading to see the challenge that Lisa issued to the participants. My 2026 One Word is STAY. To read more of what God has been teaching me, CLICK HERE!

Get wordy with your One Word

Even if you’re not a poet (I’m not)—or a lover of words (I am!)—you can participate in this month’s One Word invitation.

For April, play a little by creating or finding a poem or a blessing or prayer that reflects your One Word.

TRY A POEM

Look up poems that include your word—or write your own. Keep it simple:

  • A 3-line haiku
  • An acrostic using your word
  • A few lines of free verse
  • Even blackout poetry using a page from a book or magazine

WRITE A PRAYER OR BLESSING

It can be as short as one sentence or as long as you have time for. Think of it as a gentle offering to yourself or someone else:

  • A hope for the day
  • An offering of support
  • A line of gratitude
  • A few words you want to carry with you

You might even revisit a favorite quote or passage and weave your word into it.

I read a lot of poetry (some good & some not so good) before I settled on the poem below. The word STAY is not mentioned. However, I feel like it speaks to STAYING still long enough to hear God speak joy into our lives. Do you agree?

Everybody everywhere seeks happiness, it’s true,
But finding it and keeping it seem difficult to do.

Difficult because we think that happiness is found
Only in the places where wealth and fame abound.

And so we go on searching in palaces of pleasure
Seeking recognition and monetary treasure,

Unaware that happiness is just a state of mind
Within the reach of everyone who takes time to be kind.

For in making others happy we will be happy, too.
For the happiness you give away returns to shine on you.

Father God,

I am eternally grateful for every time you have shown up and helped me to STAY calm in a crisis.

I am eternally grateful for every time you answered my prayer with a “No”. Because you knew what was best for me.

I am eternally grateful for every time you answered my prayer with a “Not Yet”. Because you had something so much better planned.

I am eternally grateful for every time you stayed with me when I had no idea what to say or do next.

In the Blessed and Holy name of Jesus,

AMEN
