Smoke still hangs in the air outside the windows. Oh, Canada, why do you set yourself on fire every summer? 💨🔥

My heart swells each time a new photo appears on the digital picture frame that came preloaded with pictures of my beautiful granddaughter. 🖼️

An empty bowl rests on the side table where a simple breakfast of sharp white cheddar cheese and hard-boiled eggs used to reside. 🧀🥚

A third cup of hot coffee cools, the kitties nap, and Little House on the Prairie (2026) streams on the television.☕🐈🐈‍⬛🐈📺

  1. You have fires in summer too? We do too. Right now, I see tall woody structures adorned with bright green pearls fluttering in a soft breeze beyond a rectangle frame of glass. In front of this scenic window, I silhouettes of boats, shimmering dolphins, and painted rocks scattered upon an off-white table. My art projects! 🤗

  2. Barb, I heard the fires set the ground on fire because the forest floor is boreal peat. Same as last year, only this time is a re-peat.

  3. Barb, I heard the Canadian wildfires have set the ground on fire, since it is deep boreal peat. It only smolders and makes a lot of smoke. Same as last year, only this is a re-peat.

  4. My heart swells each time a new photo appears” that line says everything about what grandparent love feels like. And what a perfect domestic scene you’ve painted: the smoke hanging heavy outside, but inside it’s warm coffee, napping kitties, and those precious digital moments from your granddaughter. The contrast between the fires outside and your quiet afternoon of contentment is both sad and beautiful. Thanks for sharing this moment with us, Barb.
