Satan is a Liar

Last week my friend Diane asked me to cover her elementary Sunday School class this weekend. She has been teaching on the Armor of God & today we will be discussing how we can use The Sword of the Spirit (God’s Word) to combat the lies of The Evil One.

Opening Prayer:

Father God,

Thank you for our friends gathered here today.

Thank you for giving us your word to use as a daily guide to defeat the lies of the devil.

Help us all to become better at using The Sword of the Spirit in our daily lives.

In Your Precios & Holy Name,

Amen

Scripture:

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. — Ephesian 6:10-17 (NKJV)

Discussion:

What can you tell me about the parts of the Armour of God that you have learned about in the past few weeks?

Let’s look back at verse 17, what is The Sword of the Spirit?

Can you explain what you mean?

Teaching:

Let’s dig a little deeper into this:

A soldier’s sword could deliver stinging blows to the enemy or defend against an attack. Our spiritual sword is God’s Word. Jesus himself used God’s Word when He fought off Satan’s temptations in the wilderness.

You can rely on God’s Word during times of testing. By having God’s Word “hidden” in your hearts, you will have the capacity to wield this mighty sword in times of need. (*)

The Sword of the Spirit is the one piece of armor that is used for offense instead of defense. This “sword” is the Bible. God has given us all we need to know to live a life for Him through His Word. We can use the Word of God to cut through the lies that the enemy wants us to believe about the world and ourselves. This sword can stop an attack in its tracks before it ever gets to the rest of our armor. (*)

Activity:

20190901_094733We will use a pair of scissors as a “pretend sword” with Sword of the Spirit & Word of God written on the blades

Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

I labeled several brown-paper lunch bags with a lie the enemy tells us. and inside the bag, is a piece of paper with scripture that defeats that lie. The kids will use the sword (scissors) to cut through the lie and reveal the truth. (*)

Discuss the “lie” after each one is revealed.

I used the following, but you can use whatever is relevant to your situation/age group.

It’s okay to be selfish.

Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. – Philippians 2:3

White lies are no big deal.

“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. – Exodus 20:16

You don’t have to follow the rules at home.

Honor your father and your mother… – Exodus 20:12a

You only have to love people who are like you.

…You shall love your neighbor as yourself – Matthew 19:19b

You are ugly.

I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made – Psalm 139:14a

Gossip is fun & it doesn’t hurt anyone.

A perverse man sows strife, And a whisperer separates the best of friends — Proverbs 16:28

God only loves perfect people.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life – John 3:16
