Hearing Voices (Are You Listening to Lies or the Truth?)
Reblogged from Rest & Chaos
I hear voices.
Ok, before you panic though, they aren’t literal voices. But they are echoes of painful words spoken in my past, that seem to keep showing up in my todays.
Words like, “You will never amount to anything.”
Now that I have gotten older, I know that those words were spoken out of immature and angry hearts. Those words were not true when they were spoken. And they are not true today. And yet, the devil loves to throw them my way whenever he can to try and bring me down.
Like when I go to a work party with my husband and someone asks what I do. And I say I work part time from home. And the devil whispers, “See, you have never amounted to anything.”
Do you have any hurtful words from your past that you are carrying around?
Often when we receive harsh criticism from others we take those words and store them away in our hearts. We carry them with us as we go about our days. And when we are having a bad day, they come out to haunt us.
The bible says the devil is a roaring lion seeking someone to devour.
And one of the easiest ways he can do that is through the words we allow to run through our heads.
But Jesus came to set us free. (Gal. 5:1) He came to give us an abundant life. (John 10:10) He came to give us victory. (1 Cor. 15:57) He came to give us a new life. (2 Cor. 5:17)
Dear friends, we can’t live in the freedom, victory, and the abundant, new life that God has given us if we continue to entertain the voices of our past. We must learn to silence the lies and listen to God’s truth. So, how do we do that?
First of all, FIGHT BACK!
When you hear the devil whispering those lies in your ear, fight back with GOD’S WORD. Take those thoughts captive and submit them to God.
Ask yourself, what does God say about you?
Find a verse that combats the lie you hear and write it down. Put this paper on your bathroom mirror and every day speak God’s WORDS of TRUTH over yourself.
And then PRAY about it!
Pray about those words that keep replaying in your head. God already knows the phrases that are torturing your heart, and he wants to set you free from the bondage of them.
Then remember that these words did not escape the work that Jesus did on the cross! You are a new creation, washed clean by the blood of the lamb, and those words no longer have any power over you!
As we head into this week, let’s pay attention to the words that run through our heads. When we hear something negative, let’s combat it with God’s truth. And then pray that God would help us silence those destructive voices and listen only to His loving voice that speaks truth over us!
God LOVES you and He is PROUD of you!
