Did anyone ever tell you that counting sheep will help you fall asleep? It’s kind of ridiculous if you think about it.
Consider the shepherd who had 100 sheep. I can imagine that counting them would be an arduous task because those pesky little critters do not stand still. No sleep for the diligent shepherd. What happens when the latest count only yields 99 sheep? I suppose the shepherd could assume that he miscounted and continue on his way. However, we all know that the good shepherd would immediately recount the flock. Upon discovering that there is, in fact, a missing member, the shepherd would immediately go in search of the lost little lamb.
The same is true for God. He is constantly watching to make sure that none of His children go astray. When we do stray off the path He does whatever it takes to bring us back into the fold. I sometimes call this experience a Holy Spirit spanking.
“See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven. What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. So it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish. – Matthew 18:10,12-14 NIV
Is God speaking to you about something in your life that needs to change? I encourage you to listen & obey before you stray so far that you need a Holy Spirit spanking. I can tell you from experience they are not fun. But they are highly effective.

Love this Barb. Never occurred to me that a Shepherd couldn’t fall asleep counting sheep! What a great analogy! I most definitely want to avoid those Holy Spirit spankings! Been there done that and don’t want to again! Thanks for an encouraging word!

I’m so thankful that He watches over us, Barb! And if we stray, He diligently pursues us and brings us back to be with Him.

The sheep are always in the best care of a good shepherd who doesn’t sleep and watches over them. We are truly blessed to have that Good Shepherd. Enjoyed this post!
