🚍 When Can You Pass a School Bus? 🚍

It is National School Bus week in the US, which makes it the perfect time for a safety lesson.

In case you can’t read the graphic below the law is as follows:

Stop for a school bus when traveling:

  • On a two-lane road, all lanes must stop if a school bus has the stop arm out. 🛑
  • On a mulit-lane, one-way street, all lanes must stop if a school bus has the stop arm out. 🛑
  • On a four-lane road, if a school bus has the stop arm out, all lanes heading the direction of the bus must stop. 🛑

As a preschool bus driver, I have people illegally pass my bus EVERY SINGLE DAY!

Is the bus invisible to other traffic? NO!

Is the coffee date that you are racing to worth taking the life of a small child? NO!

Are the other motorists just so self-important that the safety of others does not matter. APPARENTLY!

Honestly, I don’t understand how people can miss a big federal-school-bus-yellow vehicle with flashing red/yellow lights and a strobe on the top.

I’ll get off my soapbox now.

Thank you for doing your part to keep our children safe.

  1. Yeah, people don’t believe in driving the posted slow speed limit by schools either. I had someone ride my ass yelling that I should pick up the pace because it around 4pm no kids in sight. Even if there are no kids in sight if the speed limit light is flashing, I am gonna drive slow. I’ve seen irate drivers drive around both the car stopped behind the school bus and the school bus. Too many people are in a hurry and don’t care.

  2. Oh and Thanks for being a school bus driver. I grew up in a city that kids either walked a mile to school or took public transportation (city bus, no subways).

  3. I pray for the safety of all people, especially those in service of others. It seems that traffic is a stream that drives tend to go with the flow, unfortunately for many in their path it can become fatal.
Thank you for the reminder for awareness, God bless!
