Simple Gifts

And Jesus sat down opposite the treasury, and began watching how the people were putting money into the treasury; and many rich people were putting in large amounts. And a poor widow came and put in two lepta coins, which amount to a quadrans.Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury;44 for they all put in out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, all she had to live on.” – Mark 12:41-44 NASB

I feel so blessed when one of our Head Start families gives me a gift. Most recently the “B” family has gifted Yeymi & I with vine ripened fresh picked tomatoes. Let me tell you, they are so sweet & juicy!

This family is not destitute but to qualify for Head Start they must meet certain low income standards.

As I was enjoying my morning egg with ham, cheese & fresh tomato the words of the Shaker hymn Simple Gifts (by Joseph Brackett) came to mind.

‘Tis the gift to be simple, ’tis the gift to be free
’tis the gift to come down where you ought to be
And when we find ourselves in the place just right
‘Twill be in the valley of love and delight.

  1. To be simple is a gift. Indeed! Someone told me Facebook and Instagram were offline the other day for 7 hours. That would have bothered me, a few years ago when I was still on those sites. But I’ve “Un-Zuckerberged” myself since then, and felt no pain. We seldom miss the non-essentials we drop from our lives. Blessings!
